Austin, Texas — On Thursday, August 29th, the Public Utility Commission (PUC) voted to adopt a reliability standard for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas region (ERCOT). The new reliability standard will provide a clear framework for assessing the grid’s capacity to meet the growing energy demands of Texans.
The new reliability standard will help guide decisions on ERCOT’s market design. Included in the new standard are explicit criteria for grid performance, with a special focus on:
- Reducing the frequency of any potential grid outages
- Reducing the duration of any potential grid outages
- Reducing the size of energy shortfalls during any potential grid outages
After the PUC’s vote, Powering Texans CEO Walt Baum issued the following statement:
“Today’s PUC vote is an important step forward that reflects Texas’s commitment to a strong and reliable grid, and it should help our state meet the growing demand for power. Powering Texans and its members thank the Texas Legislature for their leadership on this issue and look forward to continuing to work together with the PUCT, ERCOT, and legislators to further strengthen our state’s grid.”
